'Anti-ghetto' law in Denmark: Ruling Social Democrats take hard line on immigration • FRANCE 24
Danes head to the polls on Tuesday for a general election, with Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen of the Social Democrats seeking re-election. A plan to dismantle so-called "ghettos", begun by a previous right-wing government and continued throughout her term, is among the most radical in Europe. For a neighbourhood to be considered a "parallel society" or a ghetto, it must meet certain criteria. Among them: 50 percent or more of the population must be of non-Western origin. FRANCE 24's team reports from Copenhagen.

Denmark's New Quran Bill Amid Terror Threats; What It Bans, Punishes | Key Details
Denmark's parliament on Thursday passed a law making it illegal to burn Islam's holy book Quran in public places. The vote followed a five-hour debate in parliament and 94 members voted in favour, 77 against. The Danish parliament has banned the "inappropriate treatment" of religious texts - with a bill widely known in the country as the Quran law. Offenders now face a fine or up to two years in jail after a 94-77 vote. This is seen as Copenhagen's bid to de-escalate tensions with Muslim countries after a spate of anti-Quran protests in the country, causing outrage.

Human rights lawyers are challenging a controversial housing policy in Denmark.
The government is enforcing a "no-ghettos" rule, which restricts non-westerners from living in certain districts.
The idea is to keep areas diverse. But the plan is proving to be divisive, with critics saying that it is simply racism under a different name.

For many years, decades even, the rich Nordic social democracies were seen as the perfect haven for immigration. Regardless of origin, race, religion or any other status, most of these countries were built by the arrival of hundreds of thousands of foreigners.
Some time ago, however, all this has begun to change, especially in Denmark. Denmark is by far the Nordic country that has taken the most radical approach to illegal immigration. Did you know that the Danish government is even demolishing immigrant neighbourhoods? In this video we tell you all the details.

Why is Denmark taking a hard line on migrants and refugees? | Inside Story
Denmark's government is being criticised for its plans to eradicate disadvantaged neighbourhoods.
A set of laws, controversially called the 'ghetto package', was introduced in 2018.
It aims to transform areas with high rates of crime and unemployment.
But rights groups say immigrant communities are being unfairly singled out.
Denmark has been tightening its rules for immigrants and asylum seekers, including revoking the resident permits of some Syrian refugees.
But are accusations of racism justified?

Does Denmark have double standards on refugees? - BBC News
Denmark has been accused of discriminating against refugees by human rights groups, following its welcome of Ukrainian refugees compared to others.
It has passed a law allowing refugees feeling the war in Ukraine to stay in the nation for up to two years and plans to host up to 100,000 and grant work permits.
However, the Danish government has also been working on plans to reduce the number of non-EU asylum seekers.
Last year, it began controversially revoking the residence permits of hundreds of Syrians from the Damascus area, arguing it was now safe for them to return.

Denmark migration law: A sign of things to come? - Inside Story
Danish MPs pass a controversial law allowing the seizure of assets from refugees.
The Nordic state is not the first European country to tighten controls on refugees.
But a new Danish immigration law is a sign of the darkening mood towards refugee arrivals.
The law allows the seizure of refugees' assets to help pay for their stay. Among other things, it also prevents families being reunited for three years.
Danish politicians say the law is being misunderstood. They argue that, in a welfare state, everyone has to use up their own resources first before claiming benefits.
Critics say the law, and similar measures being taken in other countries, are designed to deter new arrivals - and could heighten tension and xenophobia in some communities.
So is this the new reality for migrants try...

A spate of Quran burnings in Denmark and Sweden has prompted the Danish government to propose a law banning public desecration of religious books. Denmark has been struggling to prevent the burnings, which are protected under current freedom of expression laws. The Danish government says it must act to stop the desecrations as they have increased the threat of terror attacks against Danish institutions and citizens.

“It affects me that Denmark, which I love and care about, punishes me because of the family I was born into,” says 19-year-old Ibrahim el-Hassan.
El-Hassan was born in Denmark, but is considered a "non-Western descendant".
He grew up in Vollsmose, a suburb classified by authorities as a "hard ghetto".
When the Danish government introduces its "ghetto package" of laws, El-Hassan decides to defend his neighbourhood.
Armed with social media and a petition, he begins a summer of protests which eventually take him to the halls of Denmark’s Parliament.

We Paid a Designer to Make Flags Look Danish (and explain Denmark's Weird Flag Law) #denmark #danmark #flag
In this video we paid a graphic designer to redesign a some national flags to look "more Danish". In the process of unveiling the results, we also explain Denmark's recently-overturned flag law and the history and reasoning behind the unique legislation.
We have a lot of fun diving in Danish history and the culture significance of the Danneborg to the people of Denmark. We cover everything fro mthe origin of Denmark's flag to the way it's used today. In this video we cover the origin of the flag law in Denmark and what caused a long court battle to have it overturned. This video also covers the exceptions to the flag law in Denmark and how it has been altered over the years.
Plus you will see our reactions to the redesigned flags in the video. We took many national flags of other countries and had them redesigned to look more Danish. The graphic designer that we hired was able to create custom designed flags based on elements of the Danish flag and the original country flag of the other nations.
We especially enjoyed sharing our reaction to the US flag converted into a Dannebrog-style design and the... interesting new look.
Disclaimer - we know flags and national flags can be a touchy subject for some people, so please know that we did this all in fun and don't wish to convey any disrespect for different countries flags or the Danish national flag.
Special thank you to Fiverr for helping to make this video come to life and sponsoring the designs and today's video. We would not have been able to come up with such creative graphic designs on our own!

In this video we cover the origin of the flag law in Denmark and what caused a long court battle to have it overturned.

So is this the new reality for migrants trying to settle in Europe?
And with governments hardening their positions, who will care for those most in need?
Presenter: Peter Dobbie
Guests:
Ramazan Salman - Director of the help group Migrants for Migrants
Nando Sigona - Senior Lecturer at the University of Birmingham and specialist on the refugee and migration crisis
Irene Zugasti - Co-author of the Politheor report: 'Civil Society Responses to the Refugee Crisis'

How Denmark took a hard line on Immigrants | Foreign Correspondent

‘What is Danish?’ asks comedian Ellie Jokar. Born in Iran, now a Dane, Ellie struggles to understand why her once friendly country has pulled up the welcome mat. Hamish Macdonald explores a nation with an identity crisis.
It’s one of the most open and equal countries in the world. Denmark has long had a reputation for welcoming migrants and protecting its minorities. But these days there are fractures in this once cohesive society. Its mood of tolerance has shifted and now migrants feel on the outer.
‘When do you feel Danish? What is Danish?’, asks actress and comedian Ellie Jokar, who arrived in Denmark from Iran with her family when she was four. Now she feels she lives in a no man’s land.
"I define myself as a grey zone kid because people like me are not accepted by the Danes and not accepted by the Muslims.”
In recent years, the government has passed a hundred laws which place strict controls on immigrants: they’ve frozen the intake of refugees, banned the burqa in public and made it mandatory for children of migrants to attend Danish cultural training from the age of one.
The laws are some of the most draconian in Europe and have the backing of both sides of politics. Some areas with large immigrant populations have been designated as ‘ghettos’, where you get double the punishment for a crime.
Foreign Correspondent reporter Hamish Macdonald travels through Denmark in midsummer and takes the temperature of a country in the middle of an identity crisis.
He meets a far-right politician whose provocative stunts include throwing around the Koran and who often needs a police entourage when he appears in public. He wants all Muslims deported.
Hamish visits a young Muslim woman who’s been driven indoors by the burqa ban, and he has lunch with the local councillor who’s making pork compulsory on the menu at restaurants and schools in his area.
“If you want to be integrated and accepted, they must also accept the way we live”, he says.
Hamish also takes a ride in Ellie’s pink taxi – made famous in her hit YouTube show – where she interviews Danes from all sides of the political fence, using humour to navigate and explore the cultural divide.
“I meet people that are different than me…and I try to get to the bottom of, how did they become extreme Muslims? Extremist right wing?”, she says. But Ellie is increasingly worried about the growing divisions in her country and longs for strong leaders who can build bridges.
‘So the Danes are over here. The Muslims are over here and…they don't really know how to communicate’.
